Team Dark Crisis on Infinite Earth #6 teases the epic Dark Army battle, Villain Twist, and Jon’s Evolution

DC’s Dark Crisis on Infinite Earth races toward its expected end, and Case 6 delivers a massive battle between the remaining heroes and the fans of Pariah’s Dark Army have been waiting for it. That’s not all, because those who were looking for some twist will surely get their wish, as will fans of characters like Jonathan Kent. ComicBook.com had a chance to speak to Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths writer Joshua Williamson and artist Daniel Samper prior to issue #6, as they tease some elements of the Dark Army projection, how the series differs from other events, Jon’s journey along the way, and even a little more to expect from the end.

As the series drew to a close, I was curious to see if there was more excitement about its full release or if there was more comfort. “Man, I don’t know. It’s hard. I feel, I don’t feel comfortable yet, mostly because even when my job is done Daniel has a lot of work to do and then I have to bring him home and finalize letters and things and then I have to Alejandro finish Crayon 7,” Williamson said. “I’m mostly excited at this point. I think we did a few little things differently with this series. You can tell, some of the things that happen here, one of the big bad things in this issue is overcome, not in v7.”

“This issue is a big giant fight issue and so Issue 7 is a bit more emotional and has a bit more emotional climax. So, I think I’m excited. I’m excited to see we’re getting close to the end here and I’m excited to show people what we’ve been doing, what we’ve been trying to do done with this series,” Williamson said. “I think, especially when we get to seven. This case, Issue 6, is mostly just a big fight case. Daniel and I were talking about this a little bit yesterday, that this case is probably the craziest thing Daniel will ever work on.”

Sampere agreed, and while the challenge increases as the series nears the end, it’s also exciting to get closer to the finish line so fans can see the work in progress.

“Well, the challenge on this issue has been all over the place all the time because it feels like playing the game in the toughest position possible,” Samper said. “As we keep moving forward in the series, each time I get less time to work on the problems, but the problems, at the same time, get crazier and heavier and harder to draw. It’s less time, but there’s a lot more work to do. Things are getting more and more difficult and complicated, but at the same time I saw the problem, it was so much fun to do these big fights. Playing with all the characters I love so much, full of big moments. So it was a combination of a very stressful problem and a super trying, but probably the most exciting for me As an artist and as a DC fan I’ve ever worked on. It’s my favorite away from the series and I really can’t wait for everyone to read this issue.”

“One of the things that we did with this series was that at first on purpose we started a little slower. We wanted it to be that increase. We knew it was going to be kind of a slow, slow burn and then start ramping up like crazy. All the way to build to version 6, where it’s like The two-page spread with 51 characters,” Williamson said. “It gets crazy, and then again, we go back to number 7 where 7 becomes more of an intimate emotional story of the heroes. Especially with Nightwing and Deathstroke and Black Adam and more with Jon in that issue as well. We have two scenes with some returning characters, talking to Some new characters. So, we knew Issue 7 was a bit more of an emotional climax since again, this issue was the climax of the multiverse.”

When the series began, Jonathan was trying to create a new Justice League together to fill the void left by his father and the original team, but that didn’t go at all as he had hoped. Seeing how it has grown and evolved since that attempt has been a huge part of the series, and it really has a defining moment in v6.

“Yes, always,” said Williamson. “With John, having John be this naive kid, young man, the kind he could do in the first issue to be here really ready to sacrifice himself.” “He realizes that all he needs to do is buy time. It’s a very rocky moment. He just has to go away. He just buys time for Yara, Jace and Mr. Terrific to work, to figure out how to stop Pariah, and he is willing to sacrifice himself at that moment just to earn Time for them. That was always the plan from the start. We always knew we would come to this moment.”

While Sambir loves big fights, it’s those poignant and powerful moments that make the story really special to him. “These are the parts of my work that I enjoy the most, when I have to paint strong feelings and big emotional moments,” Samper said. “It’s when I enjoy it the most. I love fighting big fights, but I really feel it when I feel like what I’m doing and those moments are really strong and really honest, and when I feel like, ‘Okay, I need to do it right,’ here.” So, I try to focus a lot on trying to feel what this character is trying to say or what she is feeling.”

“I try to feel the same emotions they do at this point, like, ‘Okay, what face would I feel if this happened to me or what reaction would I feel in this situation,’ and I try to match it up in the drawings,” Sambir said. I’m very happy with how it looks.” “John’s stuff has been so much fun because it’s a big fight and that’s always fun, but it’s not like an empty fight. It’s a battle full of hurt and strong feelings and emotions out there. I think Joshua gave me a great script to work on and it was my role to fit in with the feelings that were laid out there and not spoil it.”

As for issue #7, it will have ripple effects across the DC universe, and those ripples will continue well into next year’s story count.

“I think with version 7, I can say dark, but there’s also, again, it’s like it’s always darker before dawn and I think with version 7 there are going to be some surprises that are cutting into DC’s direction going forward,” Williamson said. “There are a few things in v7 that we’ve been able to keep secret that will have a very big impact, I think, on the DCU going forward and it will start… There are a lot of clues and excitement of what’s in 2023 in v7.

Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths #6 hits comic stores on November 8th, while issue #7 is set to hit stores on December 20th.
